October 25, 2007—Calmer, cooler breezes have replaced the
Santa Ana winds that fueled the wildfires, allowing firefighters to bring a
few of the blazes under control. Officials are allowing some evacuees to
return to their homes, but fires still threaten thousands of houses and
businesses, and latest reports indicate that none of the blazes are more
than 50 percent contained. Overall, the wildfires have destroyed
approximately 17,000 structures, from businesses to luxury homes and torched
an area of some 600 square miles. Over 1,000,000 people have been evacuated
and many people have lost their lives due to these fires!

compassion shown to the residents of Southern California by our generous
supporters, the American Red Cross was able to swiftly and successfully meet
the needs of one of the largest evacuations in California history. You can
continue to support future disaster relief efforts by donating to the
Disaster Relief Fund. Generous gifts to this fund enable the Red Cross to
provide food, shelter and counseling to the victims of thousands of
disasters across the country each year. This fund ensures, just as it did in
Southern California, that help is immediately available in every community
